Horsham Sparrows u13 Girls (White) lifted the League Challenge Cup for a second season running with a 6-1 victory over Mile Oak Wanderers on Sunday. Sparrows, undefeated this season thus far but with 3 League games remaining, got off to a flying start when Bronwen put them ahead on three minutes. Mile Oak kept their heads up and equalised on eleven minutes. A nervy period followed with neither side able to convert their chances.
Fliss broke clear to put Sparrows back in front 10 minutes before the break after a tactical switch of flanks, and the score remained 2-1 till the half time interval.
Sparrows came out the traps flying and went further ahead through Fliss’s second on 45 minutes. The Mile Oak goal survived constant Sparrows attacks with any counter attacks being strongly dealt with by Sarah, Grace and Fiona in the Sparrows’ defence.
Sparrows’ pressure finally brought results just after the hour mark when Bronwen netted her second. Megan netted the team’s fifth two minutes later and Bronwen completed a deserved hat-trick with one minute remaining, prompting wild celebrations from the Sparrows’ supporters.
High praise must be given to Mile Oak for running the league leaders very close for much of the match and for both teams playing the final in a manner their professional equivalents would do well to emulate.
